It’s the final day of National Poetry Month!

And for the final poem of the month, I’m sharing “Birds & Bees.”

After listening to Mallory M reciting his poem again, these lines just pierced my heart:

I wonder if Emmett Till got the talk

before he left for Mississippi.

Did his mother tell him that hanging

was the only way that black boys could jump

without their feet ever touching the ground?

  1. Wow… that is such a short, but albeit powerful poem. I hadn’t ever heard of it before, so thank you for sharing it with me. What an inspiration and thought provoking one…

    • Yes it is. Thought provoking as it is sad too how we’re forced to raise our children because of others preconceptions due to skin color in order for them to achieve success and keep them safe.
