Wow, so the day has come at last. It’s April 30th.

When I first started sharing my favorite poems I ran into a little problem about copyrights. And permissions to share the poems on my blogs. Luckily, I solved that by featuring recitations of the poems. Made possible thanks to SoundCloud and YouTube. And fortuitous as well, since I was able to find readings by the poets themselves.

Either way, April has come and gone too soon. I enjoyed sharing my favorite poems with you. As well as hearing your thoughts and feelings about the poems and the poets in the comments. I’m sure some stood out in particular for you (please share which and why if you’re up to it). Which made it all the more harder to choose a poem to share today. Because they’re all my favorites. All for different reasons. And as the final poem, I wanted to go out with a bang of a poem.

So tell me, what do you think of today’s poem by William Blake?

William Blake was born in London in 1757. He wrote the poem The Tyger as the counterpart, opposite of the poem The Lamb. I read both poems in college. And The Tyger was on my mind all day yesterday and mid April. So of course it became today’s final poem.

Where The Lamb portrays innocence and purity.  The Tyger questions on how something as frightening and evil as the tiger can exist. And alongside the goodness of the lamb in the same world. How is it possible to have the same creator (God)?  But after reviewing it again after all these years gave me another assessment of the poem. Evil begets evil because it’s the wolf that is fed.

How have you enjoyed this month long poetry event? Have any of my favorites become a favorite poem?

PSS I’m going on a blogging break! Starting May until August (give or take) I’ll be away from the blogosphere. Spending my time reassessing writing and publishing goals. Re-planning and recommitting to writing plans. And catching up on some reading. I still plan to post every first Wednesday of a new month for Insecure Writer’s Support Group. I already have three scheduled blogs posts (on May 2nd and 16th and one in June). Scheduled to blog on Unicornbell.blogspot.com May 9-13 (MWF). And I have a third year blogiversary on May 24th. If you’re interested in doing a blog post (I post on Mondays), let me know. See you when I see you!

    • Thanks Stephanie. Despite that it worked out well, because seeing and or hearing the poems read out loud garnered more interest in them than reading it. Audiovisual content worked best.

  1. Hi, Lidy – I’m so glad you stuck with it this month presenting us with a vast array of poems that some of us had never seen before. Your blogging break is much deserved; hope you have some fun plans for yourself. 😉

    • Thank you Heather. Glad to hear you enjoyed them and that The Tyger is one of your favorite poems. It’s about to become my youngest favorite because he loves reciting the first stanza with me. Next stop, get him to know by heart the whole poem. 😀

  2. You took us out of April with “The Tyger,” by the poet who also shared “The Lamb.” I grew up with the weather in April (or was it March?) described often as being, “In like a lion, out like a lamb.” You made me think of those times. I hope you are rid of your “Tyger-like” winter weather and fully engaged in your summer endeavors.
