Happy Banned Books Week!
So yeah, the books I ordered from Amazon came this past Tuesday. And you can’t believe how excited I was to see the tiny brown box with “Amazon Prime” tape all around it, on my porch.
Beautiful sight isn’t it?
Of course it was so beautiful that I just had to take a few more pictures:
Here’s a picture after I opened the box. Had to use my house key to rip through the taping.
Here’s a picture of all three books of the Hunger Games trilogy in its box set!
- Fact– The Hunger Games have been frequently banned/challenged for being anti-ethnic and anti-family. As well as insensitivity, having offensive language, occult/satanic and violent.
Here’s a picture of Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya!
- Fact– Bless Me, Ultima have been banned/challenged for occult/satanism. And offensive language, religious viewpoint, sexually explicitness and violence.
And here’s the picture of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo…Hmm, I wasn’t able to find anything if the book had ever been banned/challenged. But I’d hazard a guess the reason(s) would be because it is sexually explicit and violent.
Aww, look at my new books, looking all comfy together. 😀
Double awwww! And here they are, in their new home, on my bookshelf. And with their new BBBs (banned book buddies):
The Bluest Eye, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Giver and The Chocolate War.
This is not a happy moment. My two little ragamuffins tore the wrapping off the box set before I could. And I was really looking forward to it too. And do you see that tear on the bottom? How could they do this to me? How could they take away my joy like that? 😦
Well guess, I should be glad they get so excited over new books just like their mama, but still…sigh
What are you doing to celebrate Banned Books Week? Read any good books lately? Banned or not, I’d love to add them to my TBR list. Just follow this link to a previous post about my reading preference. Or just surprise me.
Don’t forget, if you want to support Banned Books Week (September 27-October 3) on Facebook or Twitter, then follow the link. And add the “I Read Banned Books” twibbon to your picture profile!
I really love the cover of Bless Me, Ultima.
You have a good haul for banned books week, it seems.

I’ve created two Banned Books displays for my library, one especially for Banned YA lit authors, since that is the focus of this year’s BBW. I’d post a picture but I don’t think I can do that here.

That’s too bad. I’d love to see the pictures. If you do post them on social media, like FB or Twitter, let me know and I’ll follow the link.

It’s always an exciting day when one receives a box of books from Amazon (or Books Depository). Have an excellent time reading all these, Lidy!

Hi Lidy, just seen you on BHB and I didn’t even know there were banned books or that there was a Banned Books Week. I can only guess it’s a symptom of religious extremism but thanks for bringing it to our attention. I’ve read the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and it’s definitely worth reading.

Hi Pete and thanks for stopping by. I’m always glad to inform others about events like Banned Books Week. You know that saying ‘awareness is knowledge is power’ (tweaked the original). And you’re right, if you visit ala.org, most of the reasons/peopl of book banning is religion and conservatism.

Nice haul! It’s good to have a banned books week, especially since some banned books seem so innocent. Did you know Winnie the Pooh is even banned? 🙂

No way! Winnie the Pooh? What did that cute, innocent and honey-holic bear do to anyone to get himself banned?

Are you planning to do any reviews on these books?

Actually I was thinking of doing a review, like a point by point rebuttal for the reason(s) the books were banned. A why you should read them review.

I think that’s a great idea!

Oh wow, all those lovely books in a box just for you! Must have been great to open. And I love that you mentioned some facts as to why they are banned as well. Quite a few things I never knew until now!

Opening that box was like Christmas and birthdays in one. Even though it was a present to myself. And yeah, those reasons the books been banned always surprise me. Can’t wait to refute them.

I also cannot find anything about ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ being banned. The movie was banned but there is no information on the book. It’s surprising because of the content but it does not appear on any banned book list. It would not be considered a banned book.

Me either and I agree. The movie was even banned in India. But the dark contents of the book really should’ve made the banned books list. Hell, Dan Brown’s The DaVinci Code made the most banned/challenged list and both books were released five years between each other. And the contents of the latter is LESS darker than the former.
